kingston_bridge1M8 Kingston Bridge Repairs – Glasgow. The Kingston Bridge was constructed in the late 1960s and carries the main M8 motorway high above across the River Clyde.  Over a period of time the cantilevered concrete walkways and parapets had suffered corrosion, and required replacement.  The Bridge passes over a number of busy roads, therefore it was essential that no debris could fall from the works to the streets below.  Special Formwork designed and manufactured a travelling gantry system – one section of which allowed the demolition and removal of the existing cantilevered section, whilst a second traveller carried the formwork for the reconstruction of the cantilever.  The extremely busy nature of the bridge meant that all of the works had to be confined within one lane width, and the gantry itself was designed in such a way to permit clear passage of site traffic.  Main contractor was Morgan Est.

* 4 structures capable of moving on rails across the bridge.
* Built in crane rail for removal of existing parapit wall
* Cantilever platform to allow to access the underside of the bridge
* Capable of withstanding gale force winds in an exposed location

The structures could only occupy the hard shoulder and first lane of the motorway as the carriageway needed to stay open. Clearance needed to be allowed for a cement mixer to drive through the structure to replace the parapit wall.
