WhiteLee Wind Farm

Whitelee Windfarm in South West Scotland is one of the largest onshore windfarms in Europe with over 150 turbines.

The first phase foundations were carried out by Morrison Construction, who used steel forms supplied by Special Formwork to construct the simple octagonal bases.

For the second phase, the combination of poor ground conditions and tall masts led to an innovative base design, that combined strength and stability, but that minimised the quantity of concrete and reinforcement required.

Main contractor John Sisk & Son chose Special Formwork to design and manufacture the forms for the tapering lower walls and circular core, as well as for the upper plinth.

The lower base was cast in a single continuous pour, then the apron was backfilled prior to casting the upper plinth.

The base and radial forms were turned around every 3 days, whilst the upper plinth had a 2-day cycle.
