A429 Swale Crossing

A429 Swale Crossing  — The project was to consist of upgrading the road link between the M2 and the port of Sheppey. The new road bridge over the River Swale required the construction of 17 pairs of Circular Piers. Each pier was up to 3 metres in diameter and rose to a maximum height of over 30 metres.

The piers were tapered, and the tops of all piers have a standard bearing detail. Special Formwork manufactured the forms in modules to suit the different pier heights. This method offered the main contractor maximum re-use of the steel forms.  The main contractor was Carillion, with BAM Nuttall as the contractors for the piling foundations and construction of the pier. The A429 project was an extensive process and took many weeks to complete and finalise a road link between the busy M2 and Sheppey port.
